The Children Interview

Tom Shankland kicked off his directing career with WAZ, a fantastic serial killer flick that was part horror film and part intellectual thesis on the nature of altruism. The film, which hits UK screens next week, revolves around a festive family gathering spiralling out of control when the parents start dropping dead in increasingly violent and unpleasant ways. IGN visited the set at the turn of the year, and this is what Shankland had to say on the subject.

Milk Review

Director Gus Van Sant's Milk, which recounts the last eight years in the life of gay rights activist Harvey Milk (Sean Penn), is a moving but conventional biopic given immeasurable heft in light of current events. Upon turning 40, Harvey moves from New York City to San Francisco with his lover Scott Smith (James Franco) where they open a camera shop in the city's Castro neighborhood, which has become a haven for gay people. Soon, Harvey – who was in the closet while living in New York – finds himself becoming an activist for gay rights and his community.

Four Christmases Review

According to the movies, the holidays are about one thing and one thing only: family values. To my recollection, there has never been a major film about a major holiday in which the main character forewent family, friends and relatives in order to spend some quality time by him or herself. In an era in which families are being redefined almost as aggressively as their values, however, it seems like it's time to see a film that reinforces the belief that marriage, kids and a domesticated lifestyle are not necessarily inevitable destinations. Four Christmases, of all populist holiday adventures, may inadvertently become the precedent-setter that changes the way the movies looks at the holidays, families and values, which is why it's a fun and fascinating if ultimately featherweight comedy - not only for the whole family, but for every kind of them.
